The Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding in
Concord, Tenn., has been helping handicapped and
disabled children since 1987 by exposing them to the
world of horses. Some students wear leg braces or
need walkers or wheelchairs. Some have Down's
syndrome, attention deficit disorder or cerebral palsy.
Others suffer from mental retardation or autism. But
on their horses at STAR, they are all riders, and in the
special bond between human and animal, sometimes
small miracles can happen.
